A First-Timer's Guide to Aburi Gardens

Aburi sits on the Akuapem ridge, about an hour outside Accra, and the change in elevation makes a real difference — bring a light layer even if it is hot in the city when you leave. The Botanical Gardens themselves are the main draw: wide manicured lawns, a working nursery, and some genuinely old trees, including the strangler fig most visitors end up photographing. It is an easy, mostly flat walk, which makes it a good option for a mixed group — grandparents and kids can cover the same ground as everyone else. Pair it with the nearby cocoa farm and craft village if you have the time. Seeing where cocoa actually comes from lands differently once you have walked the trees yourself, and the craft village is a reasonable stop for souvenirs without the hard sell you sometimes get in busier markets. Practical notes: go in the morning if you can, wear shoes you do not mind getting a little dusty, and bring cash in small denominations for the craft village. A half-day is enough for gardens plus the farm; add an hour if you want to properly browse the village too.
