The Oboadaka waterfall is located at Oboadaka, near Aburi in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Oboadaka (translated literally as "stone box") derives its name from the "boxlike" rocks commonly found in the area. The waterfall, referred to by locals as "gugu", takes its course from the Nsakyi river, mythically believed to be the wife of Gugu. In Ghanaian folklore, waterfalls are believed to be deities with humanlike qualities — they can be married. During the Odwira festival (the festival of the Akuapem people), which usually takes place in October/November, it is believed that the falls produce a "drum like" sound similar to the sound produced by the fontomfrom traditional drum. In the past, warriors were believed to hide spoils from war and other treasures such as gold and other royal ornaments looted from battle at the foot of the falls, as it was considered a sacred and secure place. The waterfall is beautifully hidden in a thick, largely untouched forest. The mostly tiered waterfalls with a slight plunge on the side flow all year round but are at their peak during the rainy season — during full flow, visitors are surrounded in a canyon of falling water. There are plenty of shade trees for a fine rest stop when travelling along the mountains. The waterfall is just a 20 minute drive from Aburi Botanic Gardens.
